Caged Children

On March 19, 2010, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty

Well, we don’t usually treat our own students this way, however we have no problems putting other kids in cages.  Particularly if we’re working to create a Public Service Announcement!

First up this week, and a first for our new P2-HD production cameras is a PSA for the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

Some people are unwilling or unable to deal with troublesome pets, and their first choice is to get rid of them – but you wouldn’t do that to your own children… Would you?

More commercials this week – our last batch before we move on to our second set of commercial spots for real clients (and shot in P2-HD on our new HPX-300 cameras).

First up this week was the classic story of a poor guy that gives his girl an “unfortunate” gift on a special day.  The end result is that he ended up in the doghouse.  Check the image gallery to see if you can spot the ill-advised gift…

Our second commercial of the week was actually a public service announcement to try and encourage people not to drink and drive.  Although you won’t see it on the gallery photos, the idea is that everyone has a “life clock” that shows how much time they have left before death.

Of course, drinking and driving would cause that number to be shortened rather quickly…

If you look carefully at some of the photos, you’ll see CG tracking dots on some of the actors where the students will be using After Effects to composite-in tracked countdown clocks.  Should be interesting!

Touring CBC's new facilities

On March 8, 2010, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty

The first-year class had our first field-trip of the term and got to tour through CBC Vancouver’s new digs.  The recent construction did wonders for the newsroom and production facilities.  Very nice!

Underwear and chocolate

On March 6, 2010, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty

More commercials this week.  We’re back from our Olympic break and back to work!

First up this week was a commercial for Fruit of the Loom underwear.  Thanks to the kind folks at Knowledge: for allowing us to use their studio for the white cyc background.

Next up was a commercial for Purdy’s chocolates – allowing a young businesswoman who has a less than successful presentation, but melts the hearts of the board members with a box of tasty chocolates!

Coming up soon – our first commercial productions using our new P2-HD HPX-300 cameras.  We are happy to be teaching tapeless workflows!  When combined with our Facilis and Omneon servers, it’s a potent combination.

Broadcast Pix – Now Showing

On February 4, 2010, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty

Following our successful tests last week of our new, portable Broadcast Pix production system, this week we trained our first year students on it.

We used the portable system to successfully replicate the same “Studio 1 Live” show that we produced earlier in the year with a full control room, audio room, and VTR room within the broadcast centre.  The possibilities are very interesting indeed…

Mmmm… Spaghetti!

On January 22, 2010, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty

Thursday’s shoot was on-location in New Westminster with a commercial for the “Old Spaghetti Factory”.

Some of our second-year students showed up with a bit of HD production gear to shoot behind the scenes video for use in a promotional video which should be showing up in a few weeks.
