“439 Powell Street,” intends to find out what happened behind the walls of the Ming Sun Building located on 439 Powell Street in July of 2013. Controversies between the City of Vancouver and the Ming Sun Benevolent Society have escalated, and the future of the building is uncertain. What happened at 439 Powell Street, and what can be done to save the building?

“Stealth Nation” documents the return of professional lacrosse to British Columbia. Narrated by hall of famer Andy Walsh, the documentary analyzes the history of the sport in Vancouver and whether the franchise will be a success the second time around. Will the community of Langley support their new franchise? Can another professional sports team be successful in an already crowded sports market?

This piece aims to explore the growing social dependency on technology, particularly with mobile devices like cell phones. They raise the question – how difficult is it for an average ‘connected’ student to spend a day without their phone, the film makers get some insight from a relationship coach to explain why people just can’t stay unplugged.
The first week of our term-2 Television student projects has been a busy one!
On Tuesday, our first-year production team “Keen-Wa Productions” was shooting a PSA promoting workplace gender equality using our new Sony FS-700 cinema camera, and on Thursday, “4:1 Films” faced the elements as we produced an exterior shoot for a bicycle safety public service announcement.
Only a small part of the production is on-set however; students spend weeks of work planning and preparing these productions! Just showing up to shoot is easy, going fully prepared, and with all of the necessary documentation is a lot of work!
The faculty lectured on Music Videos (with a generous helping of Michael Jackson!), and we demonstrated some of our production gear such as the Jimmy Jib with a remote camera head, and HD field monitors.
Congratulations to BCIT Television’s second-year production company, Insignium Entertainment! Insignium chose to develop a re-creation of “Anchorman” as a part of their term-3 Video Production class.
Following a competition on the website “Funny or Die“, their production was selected to be part of a TBS Fan Night special event airing Sunday, January 12th at 9/8c!
We’re happy to report that the videos from the TEDx RenfrewCollingwood project that we were involved with are now live!
Head over to the TEDx RenfrewCollingwood site to check out talks from some of the amazing presenters that were featured!

BCIT Television & Video Production was fortunate to have Shannon McGinn spend some time discussing the challenges and adventures of reality television production with our students!
Ms. McGinn has produced The Amazing Race (US), and has been working both as a Creative Director for The Amazing Race Canada, and more recently on the upcoming fantasy-reality competition “The Quest“, which will premiere next year.
