First Year Commercial Productions

It’s February, which means our first-year Television & Video Production students are in the midst of commercial productions!

The projects begin at this time in the spring every year and are designed to take the foundation skills that students learn in courses teaching planning productions, camera, lighting, editing and writing, and apply them in team projects.

The first set of commercials that the student production companies are working on this term:

This week in beer

This semester our first-year students will be producing 16 thirty-second commercial spots over the next couple of months (2 per week). The goal is to train students in the entire production process, from pitching an idea, right through to production and post. This isn’t all about just running out the door with a camera and shooting, but about the planning, logistics that need to go into making a production happen.

By strange coincidence, the first two commercials this year are alcohol-related!

For a bit of background, each student production company (usually group of 5) is required to produce two 30-second commercials this term, and we stipulate that at least one of them must be a real client (to give the project a bit more of a reality-check).

First up was a project for Heineken Beer which illustrates the old saying about, boy meets girl, boy chooses the wrong beer, other boy who chooses the “right” beer gets the girl.

Second up, was a spot for Industry Bar & Grill in Richmond selling on the idea that no matter what might happen by accident, it’s all good for this bar’s patrons!

Over the last few weeks I’ve been assembling a “yearbook” of sorts, from the behind the scenes production photos I took during our commercial productions this term.

When everyone is back in September I’ll be taking orders if anyone wants a high-quality hardcopy version for themselves.

All of our new commercial productions from our Term 2 Television & Video Production class have been uploaded to YouTube.

We’ll have the HD versions of these commercials coming to Vimeo in the near future as well (they’re uploaded in standard-def 16:9 widescreen on YouTube for the time being).

Our two HD commercial shoots this week kicked-off with a spot for Neptoon Records, which caters to all musical tastes. Check out the image gallery for a couple of the more unusual examples you can find in the store.

Also this week was a commercial spot for ZipCar, a short-term car rental service available in the metro-Vancouver area. In this case, it’s particularly useful for short shopping trips, especially when your hands are full!

Guys in the doghouse – drinking and driving…

More commercials this week – our last batch before we move on to our second set of commercial spots for real clients (and shot in P2-HD on our new HPX-300 cameras).

First up this week was the classic story of a poor guy that gives his girl an “unfortunate” gift on a special day. The end result is that he ended up in the doghouse. Check the image gallery to see if you can spot the ill-advised gift…

Our second commercial of the week was actually a public service announcement to try and encourage people not to drink and drive. Although you won’t see it on the gallery photos, the idea is that everyone has a “life clock” that shows how much time they have left before death.

Of course, drinking and driving would cause that number to be shortened rather quickly…

If you look carefully at some of the photos, you’ll see CG tracking dots on some of the actors where the students will be using After Effects to composite-in tracked countdown clocks. Should be interesting!

Underwear and chocolate

More commercials this week. We’re back from our Olympic break and back to work!

First up this week was a commercial for Fruit of the Loom underwear. Thanks to the kind folks at Knowledge: for allowing us to use their studio for the white cyc background.

Next up was a commercial for Purdy’s chocolates – allowing a young businesswoman who has a less than successful presentation, but melts the hearts of the board members with a box of tasty chocolates!

Coming up soon – our first commercial productions using our new P2-HD HPX-300 cameras. We are happy to be teaching tapeless workflows! When combined with our Facilis and Omneon servers, it’s a potent combination.
