In preparation for severe weather in the coming weeks, BCIT has communication methods in place to keep students and staff informed and updated.

In the event of severe weather conditions that may affect BCIT campuses, bcit.ca will be updated by 6am on weekday mornings and information revised as the situation changes. If there are any campus closures, an alert will also be sent to staff and students registered to receive BCIT Alert messages.

If you are not registered to receive BCIT Alerts, register here.

As an alternative to checking the website, you may also call the BCIT switchboard at 604.434.5734 for campus closure updates.

In cases of severe weather, we advise the use of appropriate footwear on campus, as travel routes and parking may be modified given the snow conditions.

Thank you,

Director
Safety, Security, and Emergency Management

So as you may know, there’s this little sporting event going on in BC right now. There’s a little bit of media coverage and a few athletes have come to town to compete…

The result has been that BCIT is closed-down until March 1st.

Of course, even if we were open, we wouldn’t be getting much work done, seeing as how over 120 of our students and staff are working (and everyone getting paid!) for various media outlets involved in producing programming for the event. From NHK to NBC, CTV to OBS, both students and alumni are working everywhere, doing anything and everything.

More than just a film school…

BCIT – get working!

** REGISTRATION CLOSES THIS WEEK – DETAILS INSIDE **

Rogers SportsNet – Sports Broadcasting Seminar at BCIT

Saturday, November 21, 2009

The Details

Over the past several years, more than 100 students each year have mixed with and learned from Sportsnet personalities and production personnel, along with local sports broadcasting and print figures at this annual Seminar.

This year sees our series of seminars and presentations focused on Reporting, Play-by-Play, Television Technical Production, Investigative Sports Reporting, Game Production, Public Relations, and repeats of our successful “Critique Sessions”, where the Sportsnet on-air pros assess student on-camera presentations.

Most sessions will be “open seating” and anyone can attend. We will have multiple offerings of our popular “critique sessions” and “play-by-play sessions” which attendees must pre-register for (due to a very high demand, not everyone will be able to participate in these critique sessions).

We include a sumptuous lunch as well as coffee breaks as part of the package.

Best of all – it’s FREE, courtesy of the folks at Rogers Sportsnet!

Registration

Pre-registration is required. 130 seats will be available for BCIT students from Radio, Television, Broadcast Journalism, FilmFLEX and Digital Arts. Another 20 seats will be available to guests from other academic institutions.

Registration Dates:

Monday November 2nd through Monday November 16th at 4pm

If we have more applicants than we have seats for, a lottery will determine the winning applicants.

Please print out the attached Sportsnet Registration Form ( PDF, Acrobat Reader Required) and drop off a copy in Jan Wadsworth’s office (room 100) in the Broadcast Centre Lobby.

BCIT Television alumni Justin Cousineau worked to edit this very special documentary which chronicles the remarkable story of a young woman who requires a double lung transplant in order to live through Cystic Fibrosis.

65_RedRoses is a Canadian documentary that takes an unflinching look into the life of Eva Markvoort as she battles a fatal genetic disease called Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

At 23, Eva needs a double lung transplant to live. Unable to be around other patients with the same disease, Eva turns to the internet where she forms a strong connection with two American girls in different stages of CF. As the film follows Eva on her journey to getting new lungs, we witness how her online friendship with Meg and Kina withstands the tests of both time and distance.

Registration & Orientation

The registration and orientation will be in BCIT’s main gymnasium (building SE-16) at 09:00 on Tuesday, September 8th. Television students should look for “Gate E”.

You should also be able to print out your class schedule from the my.bcit.ca website, using the “student self service” option. There are a few last-minute timetable changes at this point, so we may give you a few corrections later.

Following your initial orientation at the Gym, you’ll head over to the Broadcast Department at 10:00 in TV Studio 1 where you will meet our faculty, followed by a student services expo in the Great Hall (building SE-2) at 11:00.

Week One Class Info

Week one is a special week when someof your regular classes will not have started due to the delays caused by labour day and orientation – We’ll have some special Broadcast TV classes for you on Thursday and Friday that won’t appear on your normal printed timetable. More details TBA on Tuesday.

BookKing System

You’ve all been given accounts on our BCIT BookKing system, which is used by students and faculty to reserve equipment for classes and projects. Your initial username and password have been emailed to your my.bcit.ca account. Right now your access is limited, however you should be able to login to your accounts once we explain everything. We’ll be talking more about this in a couple of weeks, so just hold onto this information for the time being.
